Statutory Assessments

Pupils in Years 1, 2 and 6 are able to take statutory assessments at The Helix.
These include:

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
Year 2 SATs
Year 6 SATs.

Parents/carers will be advised if these apply to their child.

Phonics and Reading

When teaching Phonics & Guided Reading, our aim is to take into account the length of time that pupils stay at The Helix as a short-term provision. The majority of pupils have gaps in learning often caused by sporadic attendance due to negative patterns of behaviour. This is further compounded by low self-esteem and barriers to learning.

Pupils are taught Phonics using ‘Rapid Phonics’ published by Pearson. This scheme closes the gaps in phonic knowledge using catch-up sessions that are quick, memorable and fun. Individual pupils have at least two sessions per week.

All pupils have at least one Guided Reading session per week. Pupils are taught using Bug Club, Rigby Star and Literacy World reading books by Pearson. Some pupils also use ‘Comics for Phonics’

KS1 & KS2 SATS

2019-2020

Due to the transitory nature of our educational setting and the very small number of students taking statutory assessments with us, further public analysis of assessments would result in individuals being identified. As an education setting, we undertake analysis of results to enable us to move teaching and learning forwards as a school and this is fed into our School Improvement Plan.

The 2019/20 national curriculum assessments did not take place as The Department for Education cancelled all statutory assessments that were due to be sat between April and July 2020 (end of Key Stage 1 and Key stage 2 assessments and phonics screening check) due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
